Capsanem is a biological preparation which is used to control the larvae of the horse midge (chiggermoths/horseflies in lawns and horticultural crops.

What else can it be used against?

Caterpillars (Lepidoptera): Tomato leaf miner ( Tuta absoluta ) ; Pepper moth ( Duponchelia fovealis ); Buxus moth ( Cydalima perspectalis ); Cranberry moth ( Crambus hortuellus ); Nocturnal moths: sergeant moths ( Spodoptera spp .( Spodoptera littoralis ); corn earworm ( Helicoverpa spp. ); tomato hornworm ( Chrysodeixis chalcites ); owl moth ( Agrotis spp. ); silver Y moth ( Autographa gamma )

Beetle larvae (Coleoptera ) : Colorado potato beetle ( Leptinotarsa decemlineata ); flat-headed rootworm ( Capnodis tenebrionis )

Fly larvae ( Diptera ) : Coastal flies ( Scatella spp. ); Horn flies/skin flies ( Tipula spp. )

Bedbugs ( Hemiptera ): Tomato bedbug ( Nesidiocoris tenuis ) ; Plantain lace bug ( Corythucha ciliata )

Mole crickets : European mole crickets ( Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa ) ; American mole crickets ( Neoscapteriscus spp. )

How it works

Mechanism of action

Nematodes enter the pest and release symbiotic bacteria into the pest's body cavity. These bacteria convert the host tissue into a food sourcewhich the nematodes use to feed, develop and reproduce inside the host. This kills the pest within hours or days of infection.

Visual effect

Infested pests are usually difficult to find. Infected foliage pests simply fall to the ground. Infested pests in the root zone turn yellow or brown, but rapid decomposition can make them difficult to find.

Product description

Package size: 50 million - 2 bags of 25 million.

Development stage: Infective third instar larvae (L3).

Concentration: 86% Steinernema carpocapsae - 14% inert, biodegradable substrate.

Instructions for use

Preparation

Remove the sachets from the box and keep them at room temperature for 30 minutes

Pour the contents of the sachets into a bucket containing at least 2 litres of water per sachet (water temperature: 15-20°C)

Mix the contents well and leave to stand for five minutes.

Stir again and pour the contents of the bucket into the half-filled spray tank (unless tank mixing is done with a compatible product).

Continuous mixing of the mixture in the tank (e.g. with a recirculation pump)

Fill the spray tank with the required amount of water

If mixing the tank with a compatible product, add Capsanem to a fully filled tank at the end.

Apply immediately after preparing the spray solution

Application

Application of nematodes can be done by watering can, aerosolsprayer, through a sprinkler system, backpack sprayer or vehicle mounted sprayer unit.

All filters, especially those finer than 0,3 mm (50 mesh), must be removed to avoid clogging.

Use a maximum pressure of 20 bar/290 psi (at the nozzle)

The nozzle opening should be at least 0,5 mm (500 micron - 35 mesh) - preferably use high flow conical nozzle types.

Continuous agitation should be used to prevent nematodes from sinking to the bottom of the spray tank.

Avoid sprayers with centrifugal or piston pumps

The water tank temperature should not exceed 25°C and the pH should be between 4 and 8.

Even distribution of the spray on the soil/medium surface

Application through irrigation systems:

Pressure compensated irrigation systems are recommended. If these are not available, spray or sprinkler application is recommended. For injection through Dosatron/Venturi systems, please contact your local representative for specific advice.

Spray immediately after preparation of the solution and within a short time. Do not store mixed suspensions.

Dosage

Capsanem is typically applied at a rate of 250 000-500 000 nematodes/m² (25-50 million/100m2) for soil treatment.and at 1-3 million nematodes/litre for foliar treatment (run-off application). Always check the product label for more information.

Timing

The timing and frequency of application will depend on the pest species and the plantconditions (relative humidity, soil moisture and temperature). Consult a Koppert consultant or an approved distributor of Koppert products to develop the best strategy for your situation.

Environmental conditions

Steinernema carpocapsae is active between 14-34°C, but performs best between 19-31°C.

Ground or air temperatures below 5°C and above 35°C can be lethal.

Nematodes are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation: avoid using them in direct sunlight

Keep soil moisture levels high for a few days after application. If possible, water the plant before and immediately after application.

For foliar treatment, spray Capsanem when relative humidity exceeds 75% for a few hours after treatment.

It may be beneficial to add an adjuvant and/or a moisture retainer/wetting agent. Contact your Koppert representative/distributor for more information.

Spray in the evening (or morning in some cases), allowing the nematodes to act for several hours within the optimum temperature and humidity range as described above.

Side effects and compatibility

Pesticides may (directly) affect biological solutions

As a general rule, when tank mixing, nematodes should always be dispensed into a fully filled tank containing a compatible product.

The product is safe for most beneficial insects and mites, but somemay be affected by direct contact with nematodes applied to foliar fertilizer.

Check the Koppert Adverse Reaction Database or contact your local representative for advice.
