Dagonis®: two recognised active ingredients with modern dosage regimes
The introduction of the active substances carboxamide (SDHI) has been a real breakthrough in apple protection, as it allows the control of the two most important fungal diseases (scab and powdery mildew) with a single active substance, with remarkable results. However, it should be remembered that SDHIs inhibit fungal cellular respiration at only one point, and therefore their use carries a high risk of resistance, especially in the case of powdery mildew. We have learned over the years that to reduce the risk of resistance, we need to be smart in our use of highly effective products.

During the growing season, we can only afford a few sprays with fungicides containing SDHI. In addition, using the right combination partner can further enhance the safety of SDHI use. However, this requires a partnering agent with a different mode of action and site of action. Our apple protection technology continues to mature. Our portfolio now includes a factory combination of the active ingredient Xemium® and the well-regarded curative difenoconazole.

The new product is called Dagonis®. The rapid onset of action of the Xemium® molecule, with its unrivalled strength and long-lasting preventive effect, is combined with the outstanding curative properties of difenoconazole. In our country, Dagonis® was the first product to be approved with a dosage adapted to the Leaf Wall Area (LWA). From fading to closure at the top bud, the canopy of apple trees grows continuously. After flowering, the fruit surface area increases several times as the fruit develops. It is therefore obvious that a much smaller area needs to be protected at the beginning of the growing season than in the summer months. The use of Dagonis® offers the possibility to vary the dosage of the product accordingly, so that a lower dosage over a smaller surface area does not mean a lower efficacy.

During the growing season, the need for a new dosage regimen has been brought about by the constant change in three conditions:

- the continuously increasing canopy area (to be protected) from fading to closure at the top bud,

- changes in the susceptibility of plant tissues to scab,

- the pressure of infection.

This new dosage offers a high degree of freedom and requires a high degree of precision. This avoids the situation where a single dose of a product is over-dosed with a small canopy area at the beginning of the growing season and under-dosed with a large canopy area as the growing season progresses. The efficacy of Dagonis® is expected to provide reliable protection not only in preventive situations but also in curative applications.
