Characteristics of the Dutch Bamberger ham onion:

The ham onion is an elongated, cylindrical onion with a brown or reddish skin. Often confused with salotta onions. It has a milder flavour than the onion but is not nearly as refined as the salotta. It is a late variety, distinguished by its unique long shape. When fully grown, it produces long, pear-shaped eating onions. It has a strong, light brown skin and a medium neck. Suitable for short term storage.

Internal contents:

Similar to onions, it contains: vitamins B1, B2 and C, sulfur compounds, flavonoids, nicotinic acid, iron, iodine, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, selenium and zinc. It is low in energy, with only 38 calories per 100 grams. Onions also contain sulphur compounds that help to neutralise the stomach ulcer-causing bacteria Helicobacter pylori, making them an excellent natural cure for the disease. Quercetin, a natural antihistamine in the skin of onions, is effective in inhibiting the allergic-like reactions caused by certain foods in inflammatory bowel disease. When onions are added to soup with their red skins, the quercetin is released from the skins. It is also an excellent food for lowering high cholesterol levels, making it an excellent food for preventing cardiovascular disease. Thanks to its bactericidal properties, it is an excellent cough suppressant.
