Introduction to thyme:
A pleasantly scented, 20-30 cm tall, creeping, perennial half-shrub. The pinkish flowers open in May-June. Thyme is a much-loved garden useful plant, as it is also very useful as an herb and medicinal herb in the home.
Uses:
Harvest the flowering stems from the second year onwards.
As a herb:
Use in salads, soups, meats. Thyme is very versatile, it goes well with mushroom, tomato and Mediterranean dishes, but it is also a delicious addition to fish dishes or grilled meats.
As a medicinal herb:
Its tea is a diaphoretic, but it can be used for colds and coughs, but it is also beneficial for indigestion, an excellent appetite stimulant and an effective anti-inflammatory.
How do we grow thyme?
Sowing seeds:
For seedling production, seeds can be sown in February-March, in the open ground between April and July, above a soil temperature of 16°C. Sowing depth is 0.5 cm.
Planting:
Seedlings are planted in May.
Space:
50 cm x 25 cm row and stake spacing.
Care of thyme:
Thyme is a low maintenance plant, it grows well in average garden soil, has high light and heat requirements, and can be planted in calcareous medium or rock gardens! In summer, thyme has a pungent, pleasant fragrance and its delicate aroma makes it a good idea to plant a few sprigs under the window or near the entrance. When fully grown, you can prune off the shoots 2-3 times a year to use as a herb.
