Egg melon, also known as pear melon, is a delicious delicacy and a special ornamental plant. It is well suited for growing on balconies, terraces or mini-gardens. It is a bushy plant with yellowish-purple flowers that produce yellowish-orange, purple-striped or spotted, flat-egg-shaped and -sized fruits. The flavour is pleasantly sweet, most similar to pears and melons. Best eaten fresh on its own or in fruit salads, it can also be made into juice or jam. The plant is similar in size to a tomato, with shoots growing to 80 cm and reaching a height of 180 cm when tied up. Its requirements are similar to those of tomatoes: it can be kept in a sunny, sheltered from rain and wind, but well ventilated, in pots (40 cm diameter), in an ampol or in a crate. The thin shoots should be supported by stakes or netting. Provide sufficient water and regular nutrient solution.
