Prolonged hot and dry weather can cause serious damage to your lawns. Water Saver grass seed mix can prevent these problems. While other lawns may turn yellow and show signs of drying out under water stress conditions, a lawn created with Water Saver Grass Seed Blend will remain green. The breeders at Barenbrug have used grass varieties in the Water Saver blend that are highly drought and heat tolerant.

The Barenbrug Water Saver grass seed mix is made up of reed canary grass, English periwinkle and meadow periwinkle. The Barenbrug meadow perennial varieties are known for their good resistance to various environmental influences and their fast recovery after dry periods. While many meadow periwinkle varieties are extremely affected by dry and hot summers, the Barimpala/Barduke varieties used here recover and recover quickly.

Meadow Perch is the dominant species in the Water Saver mix

Meadow periwinkle is the dominant species in the Water Saver grass seed mix. The range of meadow periwinkle varieties is extremely wide, but Water Saver contains only those that have been shown to be the best in terms of drought tolerance, winter hardiness and trampling resistance, based on Barenbrug's research. Barimpala and Barduke are meadow perch varieties that perform well in dry conditions and have good winter hardiness.

Barenbrug's reed canarygrass varieties have deep roots, fine foliage and outstanding drought tolerance. The English Perje variety used in the mix provides a fast initial development, selected for its drought tolerance. Based on experimental trials, the Water Saver mix is a mixture of reed canarygrass, English periwinkle and meadow periwinkle, which provides excellent drought and heat tolerance.

Deep root systems up to 60 cm!

Lawns created with Water Saver blends use water from deeper soil layers, whereas most grass species have less deep root systems and thus take up water from the upper soil layers (top 10 - 15 cm of soil). Such lawns have difficulty withstanding drier periods or may even die out, sometimes even before the extreme hot and dry periods.

The reed-like xeriscape varieties in the Water Saver mix have root systems that penetrate to a depth of over 60 cm and the roots store water and nutrients as a reserve for dry periods. The other dominant species in the mix, meadow periwinkle, forms an extensive network with its horizontally running taracking root system and provides a high density of turf.
