Originates from South America (southern Brazil and north-western Argentina) and is sometimes called Brazilian jacaranda. The mimosa-leaved yucca is often planted mainly in the tropical rain belt and subtropical areas, and often goes wild (e.g. Hawaii and Zimbabwe).
The tree grows to a maximum height of 20 metres. The trunk is spindly and the crown loose.
Leaves are about 20-40 cm long, with up to 20 second-order leaf veins on which grow numerous, narrowly elongated, finely pointed leaflets about 0.5-2 cm long. Inflorescence 3-5 cm long, pads mostly lavender-blue, tube with 5 cymes, stamens four in number. The flowers appear in shoot-end spikes at or just before foliation. Fruit light brown, oval-rounded, 5-8 cm long, with a flattened, often wavy-edged, woody case, opening between two disc-shaped parts.
