Tall palm with long-stalked, fan-shaped leaves. The trunk is covered by a mantle of dead leaves. The palm is an upright trunked tree up to about 15 m tall. When the dead leaves are removed, the palm has a very different appearance from the leafy mantle. Its leaves are 1 to 1,5 metres long. The leaves are spreading in all directions. The leaf plate is intact up to the middle or two-thirds of the way up, with a palmate cleft at the tip. The fan-shaped rays are folded in a V, with mostly filamentous fibres at the edges. The petiole is about as long as the leaf blade. The small, pinkish-white flowers develop in multi-branched inflorescences arising between the leaves but rising above them. The fruit is almost spherical, up to 1 cm long.
