Excellent forage for mass feeding. Autumn-sown Italian pearl millet seed is well tolerant of spring drought conditions and can be grown with less risk than other forage crops. In low yielding but manure-fertilised areas, Italian periwinkle produces high weights (25-30 t/ha) and has very good weed suppression.
A great advantage of the seed is that it does not require expensive chemical weeding, so that the hay and haylage will be free of residues. Italian pearl millet is very good at avoiding yield losses due to extreme weather conditions, as it overwinters very well and produces high yields even in dry springs. One, two and three year old varieties of Italian periwinkle are known in public cultivation.
Italian pearl millet can produce large quantities of forage in a short period of time, from 8 to 14 t of s.a./ha.
If sown in late summer, it can be mown in the autumn if the autumn is rainy, then two to three times in spring and once more in autumn.
Along with reed canarygrass and some rye varieties, Italian perennial ryegrass is the grass crop that starts earliest in spring and can be mown in practically 4-6 weeks.
The first mowing is followed by a second mowing after a very short period of 3 weeks, and a third mowing in the event of a wet spring.
Italian periwinkle is considered easy to grow, with a crop life of between 6 months and 3 years.
