Africa's tallest native tree. It has a tall open canopy, a massive, strong trunk and wide buttresses. No other tree has such a strange trunk. Its creamy white, pale yellow or pink flowers open on the flower stalks dangling from the bare branch tips before foliage. The fruit is about 15 cm long and greenish yellow. Later, the seeds are covered with a cotton-like iron 'kapok', which was formerly used as a pillow stuffing.
It is sensitive to frost.
CEIBA
syn. Chorisia
The genus Malvaceae comprises only about 10 species of deciduous trees native to tropical Africa and America. They are tall, stout trunked trees with smooth bark on which very often conical thorns develop.
Their compound leaves grow radially at the end of the petioles.
Cultivation:
They should be grown in full sun in summer, watered frequently, in well-drained soil, while in winter they should not be watered.
