A medium-sized evergreen tree 3-5m tall, of the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the rainforests of Colombia and areas of Ecuador where humidity is above 85% and average temperature is 28°C. It is a popular plant because it produces large round fruits, red when ripe, up to 1kg in size and is used to make all kinds of jams, juices, desserts and alcoholic drinks. Some say it is also used as an aphrodisiac. Because of its high antioxidant content, it is used in many dietary supplements in the United States.

It can withstand mild frosts. It prefers high humidity, well-drained, nutrient-rich medium, and semi-shade. Protect from drying out.
