Ravenala madagascariensis (Travellers palm), belongs to the family Strelitziaceae.

Originally native to North America. It has gained a great popularity because its appearance is absolutely unique.
It is an evergreen plant that exudes an exotic, tropical feel with its large banana-like leaves, 2.5 m long and arranged in a fan shape. The leaves are usually ragged because they are torn by the wind. It produces its inflorescences between the leaves, which, being of the Strelitzia family, resemble those of the Parrot Flower. The flower of Ravenala is white in colour.
The plant can reach a height of 9 m and the foliage an extent of around 5,4 m. Its growth is medium. The fruit is brown, hard and dry, 1,5 to 2 cm in size.
It takes its name from the fact that weary travellers once quenched their thirst with rainwater collected in a spout at the base of the leaves. Hence the name travellers' palm.
It is not frost-tolerant. Plant it in a sheltered spot from the wind or put it in a pot. In winter, keep it sheltered from frost. Young specimens should be grown in semi-shade. Older plants prefer full sun. The planting medium should be nutrient-rich, chalky soil. A water-demanding plant. Avoid stagnant water.


Minimum temperature : 8 °C.
Seed germination time: 1 to 3 months. Not frost tolerant.
