The bottle palm is very unusual in appearance, as the part of its trunk near the ground is very swollen.
Its growth is slow, with a maximum height of only 3.1 to 3.7 metres even when fully grown.
Thickening of the trunk is also evident in young specimens, with a rounded bump on the trunk, which then gradually increases and elongates over the years. The foliage is green, with 4 to 8 winged, downward curving leaves at the top of the trunk, which can grow up to 3.1 metres long.

The bottle palm can adapt to the type of soil in which it is grown. Fertilize it with fertilizer three times a year. It prefers full sun and needs more water than palms would otherwise require.
It is particularly sensitive to frost.
The trunk can survive short, mild frosts, although it may lose its foliage completely.
Since its natural habitat is being destroyed, planting is being done to ensure the survival of the species.

It requires full sunlight and watering as needed. As there are essentially no special requirements for its management, the general management procedures for palms are used.

The young specimens are popular greenhouse plants, they like high humidity and sunny growing conditions, with airy, nutritious soil.
