Commonly known as the White Bird of Paradise.
It belongs to the family Strelitziaceae.
All members of the Strelitzia family are native to the subtropics of southern Africa.
Strelitzia nicolai is a sturdy, strongly structured perennial evergreen, a large, clump-growing, shrubby plant grown for its showy flowers. The bluish-grey leaves, 1.5 m long, are arranged in a fan-shape at the end of the stem, and between them it produces its beautiful and odd flowers on long stems. The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bracteole, white sepals and a bluish purple 'tongue'.
Strelitzia needs both partial shade and bright sun to grow vigorously. For the best specimen, get some shade during the hottest part of the day.
This variety is hardier than its relative Strelitzia reginae, tolerating short periods of cold. It is productive in well-drained soil in strong light, but can be grown sheltered from hot sun in summer. Leaves are damaged if temperatures are - 2°C or less, but the plant will recover later when temperatures return to favourable. Drought tolerant, but needs to be kept moist for rapid growth. Do not stand the pot in water !
Nutrient supply is sufficient once a month.
It can be kept outdoors from spring to autumn. In winter, or when the temperature drops below 5°C, it should be moved into the conservatory or indoors !
