Common name: Hylocereus undatus, Creeping Cactus, Pita Cactus, White Pitaya, White Dragon Fruit
Place of origin unknown, Cultivated for its beautiful flowers and very tasty fruit, this spreading creeper is grown as a decorative stake. Stems with 3 edges, divided into stems, with a hardened, wavy edge, covered with spines. Flowers are white, 25-30cm long, opening on the sides of the stems. It bears a rounded or oval, edible bright red (purple) fruit with green scales and tiny black seeds. The fruit has a pleasant, slightly sweetish taste.
The fruit can be eaten on its own, its pulp as a soft drink mixed with sugar and water, or prepared as a syrup as an ingredient in cakes and sweets.
It prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It grows well in containers or pots.
Minimum temperature : 15°C
Not frost tolerant. Seeds germinate in about 3 months.
