Characterisation of the Rügen strawberry:

The Rügen strawberry is THE forest strawberry, the wild ancestor of the strawberry in the Northern Hemisphere, and thus also native to our country.

The strawberries of Rügen are of conservation value:

Strawberries and wild strawberries are perennial plants of the rose family with long tendrils. The strawberries grow in the form of a rosette of leaves with toothed edges and tripartite compound leaves, which are very rich in tannins, essential oils and flavones. Wild strawberries can be harvested in June and July. Its tiny fruits have a very tasty flesh. It contains significant amounts of vitamin C and minerals.

What are the growing seasons for Rügen strawberries?

Rügen is a variety of strawberry without vines that grows all summer.

The strawberries of Rügen have to be grown in round bunches:

Sunlight requirements:

They require an open, sunny to semi-shady location.

Soil requirements:

Prefers slightly moist, humus-rich soil.

When to sow the seeds of Rügen strawberries?

Seeds can be sown from mid-March.

As the seeds are very small, do not cover them with soil, just press them in. Plant out the sprouted seedlings one by one in pots and plant them in their permanent place after the frosts in May.

Possible uses of Rügen strawberries:

Use of leaves:

Leaves can be collected continuously. The leaves can be harvested from the stems as you wish, but don't pick too many at a time, so as not to disturb growth. Do not pick too many of the stems at once, but dry them in a shady place before use. The dried leaves relieve digestive complaints and strengthen the immune system. As a gargling solution, reduce inflammation of mucous membranes by boiling 2-3 tablespoons of leaves in 2-3 dl of water.

Uses of the fruit:

The fruit tastes best when ripe, when it is richest in flavourings. Although they are small and laborious to collect, they are worth it because their taste is unsurpassed. Freshly squeezed strawberry leaves in a face wash soothe tired, stressed skin. Apply thinly sliced strawberries to sunburnt skin. A creamy paste made from strawberries mixed with cream and honey smoothes dry, flaky skin. Only use strawberry skin care if you are not allergic to strawberries.
