Deer fescue is an important perennial, butterfly forage plant, mainly in grassland communities. As a forage crop in arable fields, it is only worth growing as a pure seeded forage crop on soils where the cultivation of the more valuable butterfly species (alfalfa, red clover) is no longer economical.
Its yield is lower and its quality is inferior to that of the more valuable butterflies. However, it has the advantage of a long lifespan, usually 4-5 years, but it will last longer under better conditions. It is also a very good germinator and a very undemanding fodder crop.
The average hay yield is around 2 t/ha.
It can be sown in early spring or late summer, but spring sowing is more common. If sown in a grassland mixture, it is associated with grasses and butterflies appropriate to the use to which it is put (fescue, knotweed, red clover, etc.).
The seed requirement for pure sowing is 14-16 kg/ha. In grass-herb mixtures, the sowing rate of deer-herb is always determined by the natural conditions and the purpose of cultivation.
