Thanks to its good drought tolerance, Sudan grass also meets the animals' need for green fodder in drier periods, when grassland is no longer growing. It is also very useful as a green manure when cut.
It can be mown twice or three times during the growing period, and its quality is ideal for harvesting from 60 cm to the pre-budding period (height of about 2 m), after which its fibre content increases. The thin-stemmed Sudan grass varieties can also be used to make sledges. It gives the highest green yield of all native green fodder.
