What are the characteristics of Winter Butterhead Lettuce?

It is a variety that can be sown in the autumn and overwinters as a seedling. It heads early in the spring. The head is medium-large, well-rolled, light yellowish green. Outer leaves are slightly wavy.

Cultivation of Winter butterhead lettuce:

Seed sowing:

To sow outdoors, loosen the soil in the fall and turn in good quality compost or humus, possibly decomposed organic manure. Choose a place for the seeds or seedlings that is sufficiently sunny. Sow the seeds in late February/early March to a depth of 1-2 cm, cover with soil and compact slightly. Once the plants are 1-2 cm thick, thin out the stock, leaving 5-6 cm between two plants to allow sufficient space for development when they are ready to head. You can also transplant the thinned plants to another place, but make sure that the roots are intact and well moist.

Watering:

Since lettuce is a weak-rooted plant with a large canopy, you need to pay attention to watering. It is advisable to water them in small doses in the early morning or evening until the head is formed. If watered regularly, our lettuces will start to head very quickly and produce crisp, fresh heads.

Harvest:

Lettuce can be harvested while still in leaf, but the head-forming varieties are at their best when the closed head is already formed. The pale green leaves inside the head are the tenderest.
