General characterisation of the romaine lettuce:
An ancient, European type of lettuce. It is also known as a binder lettuce because it does not form a tightly closed, compacted head like the head lettuce, and was therefore tied together in the past to make the inner leaves paler in colour. This is no longer the fashion and green versions are much healthier.
Romaine lettuce belongs to the order of the nest-flowering plants, within which it belongs to the family of the nest-flowering plants. It is an annual plant. Its leaves are greenish-yellow in colour and have a spatulate or elongated ovate shape. The shoots are more elongated than those of lettuce. It is a low-heat-demanding vegetable plant, growing best between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius. It can be grown successfully in winter months with little light. It is not sensitive to heat and is not susceptible to mountaineering. It can be grown all summer long.
