About tomatoes in general:

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a member of the potato family, native to South and Central America. It is both a plant and its berries, which in Hungary are mainly used as vegetables. Tomatoes are a very healthy, low-calorie vegetable. Thanks to its antioxidant lycopene, eating the fruit can help fight free radicals, cancer and premature ageing. Tomatoes are very high in vitamin C, but also contain high levels of vitamins E and B, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. It is a good source of fibre, low in fat and contains minimal carbohydrates.

In March under heated foil. Germination at 20-25 0C for 6-8 days. After emergence, thinning or prickling. Planting outdoors: mid-May, after the danger of frost has passed.

Growing area:

40cmx30 cm

Seed requirements:

5 g 1000 seedlings

July to September

Agrotechnical info:

Tomato seedlings can be planted deeper, or the elongated stems can be laid down, as they easily produce lateral roots. Regularly remove the axillary shoots at 3-4 cm to speed up ripening, give the plant more light and ripen more flavoursome berries. Remove the lower leaves so that they do not come into contact with the soil to avoid fungal infections. When watering, always apply water to the soil only and avoid watering the foliage to reduce the risk of peronospora disease. Be careful not to place tomatoes near potatoes or where potatoes were grown the previous year, as they are taxonomically in the same family and have the same diseases.
