The silver-white variety Fertődi can also be grown as a pearl onion by producing 10-30 mm bulbs by sowing densely. The bulbs are spherical in shape with a white skin. The bulbs have a medium growing period and a slightly pungent taste. To grow pearl onions, the soil must be fine, crumbly, well-textured, level and weed-free. It is particularly important that the seeds are planted 4-5 cm deep, as the bulbs may turn green if they reach the surface. Plant protection is preventive, mainly against onion fly and onion peronospora. Harvesting of the bulbs should start when the small bulbs have reached the desired size (a bag contains about 500-550 seeds).
