Larvanem is a biological preparation containing Heterohabditis bacteriophore which can be used successfully to control, among other things, the May beetle pajora!
Larvanem can be used to kill the larvae of various insects in a wide range of plant species.
Pests against which it can be used:
Bugs (Coleoptera):
- Coleoptera (Curculionidae):Black vine weevils(Otiorhynchus sulcatus ) and other Otiorhynchus spp.
- White grubs (Scarabaeidae): European scarabae ( Amphimallon majale ); Summer or June scarabae ( Amphimallon solstitialis ); Common Tile Beetle( Melolontha melolontha ); Garden Tile Beetle ( Phyllopertha horticola ); Phyllophaga spp.; the Welsh beetle ( Hoplia philanthus ) and other Hoplia spp.; Japanese beetle ( Popilia japonica ); Oriental beetle ( Anomala orientalis ); Asian garden beetle ( Autoserica castanea ); Dune beetle ( Anomala dubia ); Brown beetle ( Serica brunnea ); Anoxia villosa
- Dung beetles ( Aphodius spp. )
- Leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae): Flea beetles ( Phyllotreta spp. )
Caterpillars (Lepidoptera):
- Common moth ( Korscheltellus lupulina )
How does it work?
Mechanism of action
Nematodes enter the pest and release symbiotic bacteria into its body cavity. These bacteria convert the host tissue into a food source on which the nematodes feed, develop and reproduce. The pest host dies within hours or days of infection.
Visible effect
In the root zone, infested pest insects turn a shade of red to brown, but rapid decomposition can make them difficult to locate.
Dosage
Larvanem is usually applied at rates of 250 000-500 000 nematodes/m² (2,5-5 billion/ha).
Apply 25-50million nematodes per 100m2 surface area!
For best effect, it is advisable to apply the product 2 times. Allow 3-4 weeks between two treatments.
Timing
The optimum application period:
June to September
Timing and frequency depend on the pest species and the growing environment (relative humidity, soil moisture and temperature). For advice on the most appropriate strategy for you, contact a Koppert consultant or an authorised distributor of Koppert products.
Environmental conditions
- Haterorhabditis bacteriophora is active at temperatures between 16 and 35 °C, but performs best at 19-33 °C
- Soil temperatures below 5 °C and above 35 °C can be fatal
- Nematodes are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light: do not apply them in direct sunlight.
- Keep soil moisture levels high for a few days after application. If possible, water the crop before and immediately after application
- Spray in the evening (or in some cases in the morning) to keep nematodes at the above-described temperature for several hours.optimum temperature and humidity range described above for several hours
Instructions for use
Preparation
- Remove the sachets from the box and keep them at room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Pour the contents of the sachets into a bucket containing at least 2 litres of water per sachet (water temperature: 15-20 °C/59-68 °F.
- Mix thoroughly and allow the contents to stand in the bucket for five minutes
- Mix again and pour the contents of the bucket into the half-filled spray tank (unless you mix it with another compatible product in the tank)
- Keep mixing the mixture in the tank (e.g. with a circulating pump)
- Fill the spray tank with the required amount of water
- If you mix the product in the tank with another compatible product, add the Larvanem to the fully filled tank at the end
- Disperse immediately after the spray solution has been prepared
Dispensing
- Nematodes can be applied with a watering can, compressed air sprayer, irrigation system, backpack sprayer or self-propelled sprayer
- To avoid clogging, all filters must be removed before use.especially if they have finer mesh than 0,3 mm (50 mesh, i.e. 50 holes per inch)
- Apply a maximum pressure of 20 bar/290 psi (at the nozzle)
- And the orifice of the spray nozzle should be at least 0,5 mm (500 micron - 35 mesh) - preferably a high flow rate conical nozzle
- The solution should be constantly stirred to prevent nematodes sinking to the bottom of the spray tank.
- Avoid sprayers with centrifugal or piston pumps
- The water tank temperature should not exceed 25 °C/77 °F and the pH should be between 4 and 8
- Spray the solution evenly on the soil/medium surface
Application by irrigation systems:
- Pressure compensated irrigation systems are recommended. If these are not available, spraying or direct irrigation to the tiller is recommended. Contact your local representative for specific advice before injecting using Dosatron/Venturi systems
- Spray the solution as soon as it is prepared or within a short time at the most. Do not store the sprayed suspensions
Side effects and compatibility
- The use of plant protection products may have a direct and indirect adverse effect on our biological control solutions
- As a general rule for tank mixing, always pour the nematodes into a fully filled tank containing the compatible product
- The product is safe for most beneficial insects and mites, but some may be affected by direct contact with nematodes applied to foliage.
Consult Koppert's adverse reaction database or ask your local distributor for advice.
