Description:

The mixed-flowered pendant begonia (Begonia pendula) has double flowers. They show best in flower pots and planters. They are also very beautiful in hanging baskets and pots.

Planting:

You can plant the tubers of hanging begonias in fresh potting soil in spring, after the last frost. Use a flower pot or planter with holes in the bottom to allow excess water to drain out. Cover the bottom of the pot with clay granules. Put the potting soil in the pot and place the begonia tuber on top. Cover the tuber with 1-2 cm of soil. Space the tubers 30-50 cm apart. Water the begonia immediately after planting.

Care:

The hanging begonia grows and flowers well in partial shade. You can encourage re-blooming by regularly cutting off the spent begonia flowers. Protect the begonia from bright sunlight. The soil around the tuber should not be too moist, as very wet soil can cause the begonia tuber to rot. Begonia tubers overwinter very easily. Pick up the tubers after the first frost. Shake the soil off the tuber and place the begonia in a box with peat moss or sand. Store begonia tubers in a frost-free place. You can replant them next spring.
