What is garden perlite and what is it used for?
It is a naturally occurring volcanic rock, the grinded and expanded perlite particles are mixed into the soil to provide an aerated environment and a uniform water supply for the potting soil. An excellent soil loosener, it can store 20 times its original weight in water.
The benefits of its use are
Optimum aeration of the soil, higher water retention capacity (soil moisture control), increased structural stability. It promotes the development of a rich and healthy root system and increases the resistance of the plant. Perlite contains no nutrients but can also be used to prolong the action of mineral fertilisers.
