The common lion's tooth is a 20-40 cm tall herbaceous perennial plant. It resembles the dandelion in flowering, but unlike the dandelion, it flowers in mid-summer. The whole plant, stem, leaves and flower bracts are covered with hairs. Stems are erect, leafless, unbranched. The leaves form a rosette of leaves. The winged leaves are oblong-lanceolate or inverted-ovate with lacy edges.

Flowers from June to September. The 2-5 cm diameter racemes open solitary at the stem end. The inflorescence is composed of bright yellow, five-petalled, tongue-shaped flowers, without tubular flowers. The outer petals are orange or reddish underneath. Number of stamens five. The flowers open in the morning and close at noon. The stem under the flower is thickened.

The fruit is cascade-shaped, with a hair-like tuft at the end.
