The finger maple or fan-leaved maple (Acer palmatum) is a species of the order Sapindales and family Sapindaceae. It is one of the dominant species in Japanese gardens and is most often called Japanese maple in Hungarian (along with other species). It is a very popular ornamental plant because of its distinctive appearance. There are many varieties, some with light yellow, pale green, burgundy-edged and some with completely dark burgundy leaves. Its colourful foliage is very contrasting against green trees. They are also often grown as bonsai.
