Splendid parrotflower orange (Strelitzia reginae)
Contents of the package 3 seeds
Fleshy, succulent, 4-6 cm in diameter, its roots penetrate deep into the subsoil and spread far and wide.
Stem branched, with short joints. Each branch produces 5 to 6 elongated leaves, resembling banana leaves; older, mature stems may have up to 6 to 8 branches. The leaf stalk is long. The leaf blade is waxy, bluish or greyish green, 40-60 cm long, 8-20 cm wide at the shoulder, with a narrowed apex and a well-developed main body.
Flowers united in inflorescence. This is held by a 70-100 cm long, cylindrical, stem-like formation - this is in fact the leaf sheath. This leaf sheath bends at the apex of the inflorescence and acts as a boat-like sheath to protect it before it opens and to hold it afterwards. Flowers (5-6, possibly more) develop in the bracts. They open one after the other, one after the other, and straighten out from their right-angled bent state. The petals of the peculiar bird's-head-shaped flowers are dart-shaped, bright orange or dark blue. Each flower stalk produces 1-3 seeds after fertilisation.
