A monocotyledonous tree that grows a single grey, smooth-surfaced trunk when young, later growing multiple, spongy-fibrous trunks. It rarely grows taller than 12 m, its thick leaves forming a characteristic umbrella-shaped canopy. It grows slowly, about one metre every ten years.
Its white or reddish-edged, sword-like leaves grow in clumps, 3-5 cm wide and 40-60 cm long, often with very pointed tips. The leaf blade is dark green or greyish green. Its fragrant, creamy white flowers open in early summer. The dioecious flowers have 6 stamens and 3 bracts, the 6 bracts are short, twisted into a bell-shaped tube.
The trunks of the plants are solitary until their first flowering (15-30 years old), the branching forming after the inflorescence, which grows in huge branched clusters at the shoot apex, withers and then falls off. The 5 to 10 new shoots that are produced all grow their own endless canopy, a cluster of leaves, and the resulting branches form the characteristic umbrella-like canopy of the dragon's blood tree. The yellow berry crop, with 1-3 seeds, is spherical (or irregular in the ajgal subspecies) and ripens in late summer. The 6-8 mm light brown seeds germinate in two months at 25 °C.
After flowering, the dragon's blood sap (and that of the szokotra dragon tree) is extracted by tapping the trunk. Because of its resinous substances, it was used in the furniture industry, among other things, for staining or varnishes.
