Agavaceae
Commonly known as Cordyline australis Purpurea, Purple Cabbage Tree, Broad-leaved bush lily,
Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii.
It is a very popular Cordyline variety. Slightly slower growing than the green-coloured variety, it is an evergreen, sparsely branched tree with thick, intense purple leaves, sky-high, 1-1.5 m long and vigorous. The small fragrant flowers open in a huge cluster in summer. This Cordyline is a truly spectacular, yet easy to care for and not an expensive plant. Its height can reach 10 m.
As this variety is subtropical in origin, they should be kept above 12°C in winter.
Cordyline is not too demanding when it comes to watering, and its soil ball should not be allowed to dry out completely. It is preferable that the irrigation water is lukewarm rather than cold, otherwise leaf drop or leaf browning may occur.
For good growth it needs nutritious soil with good water management. Potted specimens should be watered moderately, and even less in winter. It needs plenty of light but will tolerate partial shade. The seed is about 2 mm in size and is kidney-shaped, shiny black in colour.
They can be damaged by weevils.
Minimum temperature : 12 °C.
Sensitive to frost. Seed germination time is about 1 to 2 weeks.
