A species of lily-like evergreen native to New Zealand, with a varied appearance. Fleshy, strap-like leaves 60cm long with a bluish-green tinge. It produces its star-shaped white flowers, 3-10cm long, in loose clusters in early to mid summer. Its roots will be 2-3cm wide and its rhizomes are edible when cooked. Height max. 50-75cm. Planted as a border plant, they make a sumptuous display.
Prefers well-drained sandy, peaty soil, warm and sheltered sunny growing conditions.
Fertilize for best growth.
For winter, pick up the rhizomes and overwinter in a cool place.
