SOLANUM BETACEUM - Tamarillo - 5 seeds per pack

Common name: Solanum betaceum (= Cyphomandra betacea), Tamarillo

A larger shrub, originally native to the Andean mountains of South America, but now cultivated in many places for its red, sweet fruit. It belongs to the potato family, like the traditional tomato. Because it reaches up to 2m in height and has a woody trunk, it is also known as a tomato tree. It usually produces its first egg-shaped, red, sweetish fruits within 2 years. As the fruit grows on long stems, it is easy to harvest. The tamarillo is not a demanding plant, but it does require regular watering in the hot summer months. In our country, it is mainly kept as a container plant, in the garden or on the patio. Fruits ripen around December-January. It is highly poisonous!

In summer it can be eaten raw or as a preserves, fruit salad, liqueur, etc.
Not frost-tolerant.
