This rare palm variety from Chile is very hardy and tolerates cold winters particularly well. Its appearance is robust and strong. Its massive trunk can grow up to 25 m in height and 1.3 m in diameter. Leaves 3-5 m long. Leaves are dark green or bluish, feather-shaped.
It is considered the slowest growing palm in the world. Another speciality is that the sap of the tree is used to make a very fine liquor. If you break the hard shell of the seed, you will find inside a 'liquor-like' seed with a taste similar to coconut, but with a rather faint smell.
It likes full sun and plenty of water, but do not stand the pots in water. Plant in nutrient-rich soil used for palms. It is sufficient to replant the palm every 2 to 4 years. For transplanting, use a soil mixture of 2/3 compost, 1/3 peat or potting soil mixed with sand. You can also mix a fertilizer with a long-lasting effect into the soil.
Water the potted specimens in a controlled manner when they are fully grown. Pot-grown specimens should be regularly fertilised and kept outdoors in the sun as long as possible in summer.
Minimum temperature : - 15 °C
The germination period of the seeds can last from 3-4 months to 1 year. Germination can be promoted by heating the soil.
