This genus is a member of the canna family. The genus consists of 9 species, widespread in subtropical and tropical areas of the New World, and widely abandoned in cultivation. They are vigorous growing plants, with large, lance-shaped leaves growing from a root-tuber on stout, erect, cane-like stems. Their lily-like flowers are mostly yellow, orange or red. Their leaves also vary in colour, ranging from striped to dark red. The seeds are small and hard and were used by the Indians for gunpowder.
