Palmae

Commonly known as Brahea armata, Mexican Blue Palm, Blue Hesper Palm, Gray Goddess,

Distribution: Southern California, Guadeloupe Islands.

There are 12 species in the genus BRAHEA, which are fan palms with strong trunks growing up to 15m tall. They are grown for their striking appearance and showy leaves.

Brahea armata - rock palm - has bluish-grey or silvery-blue leaves that are an eerie sight in the moonlight at night. The stiff, fan-shaped leaves are sessile to the middle and the petioles are spiny. These are true desert palms. They can withstand high heat, drought and heavy frost. In the Brahea palm, early flowering is quite normal, as well as the large colourful leaves, which are much loved!
Brahea palms are such a beautiful palm that the colour can be so blue that it completely captures your attention! So it makes sense to take advantage of this feature when planting it among the plants in your garden, because it gives an extraordinary accent! However, its petiole is spiny, so watch out for that too!
It tolerates drought well, full sun and partial shade. It is sensitive to stagnant water, but likes to be fed with nutrients and a constant water supply. It grows best in full sun. As a potting medium, plant in standard palm soil. They grow slowly at first but accelerate once the trunk emerges.
They can be damaged by woodlice.
For its management, the general procedures for palms are used.

Minimum temperature : -13 °C
Frost tolerant.
It is generally accepted that Brahea palms suffer no damage to the foliage at -8°C, and only minor frostbite at -12°C. This palm species is also ideal as an outdoor plant in our country.
Seed germination can take from 3 months to 1 year. Brahea is one of the palms known to germinate after 3 years.
