Native to the semi-desert areas of southeastern Mexico, where it grows to 4-6 m tall. The trunk is thickened at the base for water storage. The long, ribbon-tipped, greyish-green leaves emerge from the top of the trunk in large numbers, arching downwards and inwards.
It is a very popular plant in our country because of its simple handling and its highly decorative, elegant effect. It comes in several sizes, but even when young it has beautiful, recurved, dense, compact leaves.
It prefers bright and warm places. It is well tolerant of dry air.It requires regular watering during the growing season from spring to autumn. It can be fertilized once a month. Sensitive to stagnant water. It needs a well permeable soil. It is an ideal plant for dry-air dwellings. Slow growing. Can be kept outdoors in summer, in a semi-shaded area if possible. Watering should be reduced in winter. In light and cool conservatories and staircases it is easy to overwinter. It appreciates occasional water spraying (misting).
Minimum temperature : Sensitive to frost.
Seed germination is easy, taking about 6 to 8 weeks.
