Osmanthus fragrans -Sweet Osmanthus - Sweet Olive
An evergreen species native to China and Japan, this shrub, which can grow to a height of 12m, can be kept under control by pruning until the desired height is reached. The leaves are smooth, green above the surface, the backwoods are a paler colour. Its tubular flowers are white, very fragrant (similar to ripe peaches and apricots) and open from late winter to mid-summer. Its flowers have been used by the Chinese for centuries to perfume teas. It is also a favourite in Chinese cuisine as a jam for flavouring cakes, as well as in liqueurs, soups, etc.
OSMANTHUS
Fragrant tree
This genus of the olive family (Oleaceae) includes about 15 slow-growing evergreen shrubs. They are native to East Asia, although 1-2 species are also found in the USA. Their simple, transversely opposite leaves have a spiny edge in some species. Their small, 4-petalled, white or yellow flowers are highly fragrant, some species resembling jasmine, others gardenias. They bear round, dark blue fruits.
Cultivation:
Require a humid climate, moderately nutritious, loose soil and a sunny spot.
