A well-known small tree found naturally in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. It is widely cultivated for its heavenly-scented flowers, which are also used to make essential oils and perfumes. It grows rapidly, reaching a maximum height of 12m in natural conditions. It requires full sunlight and partial shade to grow. It likes acidic soil and irrigation. Its leaves are evergreen, smooth and shiny. The flowers are very fragrant, drooping on a long stem, consisting of six narrow greenish-yellow (rarely pink) petals, resembling a starfish.

Ylang-ylang oil is used in aromatherapy, is believed to reduce high blood pressure, normalise skin sebum secretion and is also known as an aphrodisiac.
