Introduction to the salt flower:

The saltwort(Limonium sinuatum) is a versatile summer flower. It produces tufted leaf rosettes 60-90 cm tall with forked flower stalks. Its tiny, true flowers are white or yellow and fall very quickly. However, the brightly coloured, papery cups are long-lasting. They come in many shades from white to yellow to rose, lavender, blue and purple.

Caring for saltwort

The saltbush is an annual plant. It flowers from July to October. Its flowers can also be cut and it dries well. Garden saltbushes need plenty of sunlight. A few hours of shade can significantly reduce flower formation. It requires sandy, well-drained soil. Good drainage is very important, otherwise the plant will rot easily.

End of winter - ordering seeds

Order or buy seeds in good time so that you can choose from the full range of colours of the saltwort.

Early spring - sowing

Sow indoors from March. In warmer areas and sunny spots, you can also sow directly into the garden in April. The plant will flower a little later.

Summer - cutting

You can cut a few branches off at any time in the vase. For drying, the just-opened buds are best. Cut off the rest before the first frost and dry.

The garden saltwort prefers a warm, sunny spot. Its distinctive appearance makes it unsuitable for all summer flower beds, but it looks good in colourful groups planted in front of a wall or fence. Planting steps

Supplies: saltwort seeds, peat-free soil mix, propagation tray, glass plate

Sow indoors from mid-March at a temperature of around 18°C. Fill propagation trays with peat-free soil mix.

Place two or three seeds in each tray, cover thinly with soil and moisten gently with a spray bottle.

Place the trays in a sunny window with a temperature of up to 23°C and cover them with a glass or plastic lid.
